Coaching Sessions

The structure of coaching sessions is dependent on where the student is at when coaching begins, and what has happened over the previous weeks. Sometimes 'Triage Coaching' is needed when a students first begins coaching if the student has fallen behind on schoolwork, and needs assistance in catching up, or is completely over-stressed, and needs to identify and work on reducing the stress. We then work together to lessen the stress, and work on catching up. From there we begin to build, implement and maintain Mindsets, Emotional Regulation, Systems and Routines to develop the Executive Function System.

During a typical session student's generally walk away feeling confident knowing what is coming up in each class, that they have a plan for the week, and a coach who is in their corner helping them follow through on the plan and become more independent.

Typical Coaching Session:

How are you doing?

Catch up with events since the last session

What went well over the past week?

Is there anything that was difficult that you would like to work on during this session?

What would you like to be the key focus during this session?

What key things can you take away from the session?

What is one thing that you would like to achieve before our next session that will help you work towards your goals?

Planning & Action Items

Build on what is going well

Address what has been difficult and work together to problem solve

Make a task management list of what needs to be completed for each class

Break work into manageable chunks

Assign a day/time to work on each item

Discuss how to execute and follow through on the plan

Set up reminders as needed

Study Skills as needed

System Building

- As the Executive Function System is built upon visualizing and self directed talk to execute a plan over time, we will work on externalizing and accommodating non-verbal and verbal working memory by making the thinking process more visual, and by verbally talking through daily tasks.

- Time Blindness is often common with students. Students can get stuck in the 'now', and have difficulty using information from the past to help plan, prioritize and problem solve in the present and for future events. We will work on applying past experiences to daily situations to develop self awareness.

- If stress levels are high and are interfering with work completion, we will discuss the possible stressors and potential strategies for reducing stress

- We will work on building Self Advocacy Skills - knowing when to ask for help, what questions to ask, create email templates for teacher correspondence, and discuss how to research available resources for assistance.

- We will analyze student's course material to practice developing note taking and study skills

- We will also reflect and track routines and strategies to allow students to build self-awareness around the routines, systems and accommodations that are contributing to their goals and overall well-being.

Sessions are completed virtually. Through the use of Zoom, Google Meet, Google Drive/Docs/Slides, and screen sharing, students are active and engaged throughout the session. It also allows for coaching to occur at the convenience of the student, whether they are away at school, or at home. Most assignments are digital, so we can look at them together online, and make a plan to complete them.
